What is Geothermal AC and Heating Maintenance?

Ground source heat pumps provide homes with geothermal AC and heating. A ground source heat pump uses heat extracted from the ground to heat the home in Winter. The heat pump reverses the process to supply the home with cool air in the Summer. Heat is extracted from the home and pumped into the ground, cooling the home and facilitating the ground as a heat sink. Geothermal systems may be installed nearly anywhere that a conventional furnace could be used.

Energy Efficient Heat Pumps

Geothermal and air source heat pumps are more energy efficient than conventional furnaces and other heating systems because heat pumps produce a higher ratio of conditioned air for each unit of energy consumed. Air source heat pumps use heat extracted from the air outside. Ground source heat pumps essentially recycle heat from the ground under the surface of the Earth, reducing the amount of non-renewable energy needed to heat and cool the home. For a conventional furnace, the ratio is close to 1 to 1. For a heat pump, the ratio can be as high as 2.5 to 1. This means that the heat pump produces 2.5 units of conditioned air for every one unit of energy consumed.

You can even add a desuperheater to your geothermal AC and heating system to produce hot water for your home. The desuperheater uses waste heat extracted from the interior of the home to heat the home’s hot water supply. You can reduce your home’s hot water costs by as much as 30 percent with a desuperheater.

Geothermal AC and Heating Maintenance

For the most part, ground source heat pumps are maintenance-free. However, these systems do require annual geothermal AC and heating maintenance tune-ups. Your WA Air Conditioning technician performs a series of inspections and adjustments to tune your heat pump.

An annual heat pump tune-up consists of:

  • Filter Check and Replacement
  • Air Flow Inspection
  • Temperature Differential Assessment
  • Ventilation System Inspection and Repair
  • Refrigerant Recharge
  • Refrigerant Line Repair
  • Lubrication of Motors
  • Thermostat Calibration
  • Electrical Inspection
  • Cooling Coil Cleaning and Inspection
  • Condensate Pan and Drain Cleaning
  • Belt Adjustment and Replacement
