Many people have rooms in their home that aren’t used much. In order to lower heating and cooling costs, they close the vents in those rooms and then close the doors. Unfortunately, this usually doesn’t work as you’d expect, and it can actually end up costing you more in the end. Closing Vents Often Causes Inefficient Operation An HVAC system doesn’t detect how much cooled or heated air a home needs. Instead, when installs a system for one of our customers in Trinity, we calibrate it based on pressure. That’s what dictates how hard the blower needs to blow. When you close a vent, you increase the pressure. The blower is now pushing against more resistance. With systems that are able to vary the speed to the condition, the blower will ramp up to compensate, which causes the system to operate in an inefficient manner. The typical system is not variable-speed and so will continue to spin but provide less airflow.
